Ottumwa High School Students Focused On Cancer Campaign

A $3,000 grant has been awarded to the Ottumwa High School Advanced Anatomy & Physiology class from the Robert McCune Endowment. Funds from this grant have been used to support the creation of a public awareness campaign related to cancer. Jeremy Allar, an OHS science teacher, has been leading the project during this school year.

The project is similar to the class’s organ and tissue donation campaign that has been a part of the course’s curriculum for the past 20 years. Students are creating a variety of messages using different media to reach a variety of audiences.

“With this grant, the Advanced Anatomy & Physiology students are approaching the study of cancer from a different angle,” said Allar. “They need to look at how to inform and educate people about cancer as opposed to looking at the details of it’s formation and workings.  This grant funded project requires a more personal/humanitarian approach as opposed to a strictly academic approach to cancer.  The students are really refining their personal communication skills and stretching their plans to educate everyone from elementary students to older adults.”
