Local Veterans Pantry Volunteers Honored with Governor’s Award

Each month, over 200 Wapello County veterans receive fresh, healthy food through the Veterans Mobile Food Pantry, and at the heart of that effort are Deb Roe and Don Lewis.

For years, Deb and Don have led with quiet dedication, showing up early, staying late, and making sure no veteran is overlooked. Alongside a team of passionate volunteers, they have built more than just a pantry. They have created a community of care for those who served us.

Their commitment recently received statewide recognition as they and the Veterans Mobile Pantry volunteers were honored with the Governor’s Volunteerism Award.

Supported by a Bright Ideas Community Enrichment Fund grant from the Ottumwa Legacy Foundation since 2022, the pantry continues to grow. But it is Deb and Don’s hearts and hands that truly make the difference.

To have leaders like Deb and Don in Wapello County is something to be proud of. To see them honored at the state level is something to celebrate.
