Work is continuing on the Capitol and Capri Theaters in downtown Ottumwa.  Not only have the theaters been cleaned of the trash and debris inside, a new roof has also been installed and the asbestos removed which completes the stage 1) goal of making the buildings safe and watertight.

Along with our wonderful volunteer REACT (River’s Edge Arts and Culture Theater) Committee, we are now taking the appropriate steps to determine what are the best and most productive uses for these great old buildings   To assist us with this challenge, we have engaged experts from a Minneapolis, MN firm by the name of Art Space.  Art Space is a national leader in the field of developing affordable art spaces through the adaptive reuse of historic buildings.  After Art Space’s initial visit to the Ottumwa community, which included multiple meetings with community groups and a large town hall meeting, a preliminary report was developed.  We are happy to share this initial report with the public to help continue the conversation about developing these buildings long-term.
