River Hills Brings Local Autism Evaluations Closer to Home

Early identification of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is critical, yet families in Iowa often face long waits of 18 months or more for evaluation at the nearest certified center, which can be more than 100 miles or two hours from Ottumwa. Traveling this far means taking time off work, paying for gas, and managing the stress of a long trip for an evaluation that is essential for their child’s future.

Recognizing this challenge, River Hills Community Health Center (RHCHC) took it upon themselves to find a solution for the community. They developed a plan to bring autism evaluations locally and applied for support to make it happen. With funding from the Ottumwa Legacy Foundation’s Bright Ideas Community Enrichment Fund, RHCHC purchased two Autism Observation kits.

Since the beginning of the year, RHCHC has evaluated 40 children and is now accepting referrals from other clinics. Early detection and intervention are essential to ensure children can access services through Iowa’s Area Education Agencies.
