Thanks to a collaborative effort organized through the Growing Wapello Together Consortium, the Food Bank of Southern Iowa and the Salvation Army are now partnering to provide food insecure individuals with free and fresh produce.
Currently, the Food Bank of Southern Iowa has fresh produce that the regional food pantries can’t store or can’t distribute before it spoils. If the food can’t be distributed before it spoils, the Food Bank must pay landfill fees and dispose of the food. The Food Bank would like to see families in need have an opportunity to pick up the food before it goes to the landfill.
Food insecure families can now pick up food from 1:00-3:00 and the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month. The event is held rain or shine and is first come, first served. If you would like to volunteer to help or have additional produce from your own garden you would like to contribute, please meet at the Salvation Army parking lot during designated time.
